Purpose
We are seeking a Director of Human Resources to lead employee services, payroll, benefits, talent acquisition, and compliance, driving initiatives that support the seminary’s mission and strategic objectives. This key role ensures policies and practices align with legal standards while promoting organizational success and fostering a healthy, vibrant workplace culture. The HR Director will report directly to the Vice President of Finance and Administration (VPFA).
The successful candidate will lead in alignment with Asbury Theological Seminary’s mission, ethos, statement of faith, defining values, and strategic vision. Essential Duties
1. Compensation, Payroll, and Benefits
- Manages staff and student employee compensation plans that meet administrative approval, ensure legal compliance and fair practices regarding compensation. Conducts market salary surveys and internal salary audits as requested to ensure internal equity and competitiveness.
- Oversees accurate and timely payroll processing, including W-2/1095 preparation.
- Designs and implements comprehensive and compliant employee benefit programs and leads annual open enrollment.
- Manage employee leaves (FMLA, LOA) and address employment concerns effectively.
- Directly supervise (2) a Payroll Specialist and a Recruitment & Benefit Specialist.
2. Compliance and Policy Management
- Ensure compliance with employment laws and Seminary policies.
- Maintain and update the Personnel Policy Manual (Employee Handbook) to reflect best practices and legal requirements.
- Act as Deputy Coordinator for Title IX and Privacy Officer for HIPAA compliance.
3. Talent Acquisition and Performance Management
- Lead recruitment efforts to attract top talent aligned with the Seminary’s mission.
- Oversee performance evaluations and maintain accurate, goal-focused job descriptions.
4. Training and Development
- Create and deliver impactful training programs for supervisors and employees.
- Launch initiatives that empower staff and demonstrate the Seminary’s commitment to professional growth.
5. Budget and Financial Oversight
- Develop and manage the HR departmental budget, compensation, and benefits budgets.
- Approve vendor payments and ensure financial accountability.
6. Employee Relations and Additional Duties
- Investigate and address employee complaints regarding workplace issues.
- Partner with managers and supervisors to provide feedback and address performance concerns with employees, following the improvement process.
- Conduct meaningful exit interviews to gather insights and improve processes.
- Participate in institutional assessments and contribute to advisory committees.
- Participate in the KY chapter of the College and University Personnel Association.
- Additional duties as assigned by the VPFA
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required with a preference for Business, Human Resources, Accounting, or related field.
- Certification: Hold Human Resources Institute Certification (HRCI) PHR/SPHR designation, or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP designation (or commit to obtaining one).
- Experience: At least 5 years of leadership experience in HR, payroll, managing staff, and budget management.
- Skills: Showcase strong analytical, interpersonal, and organizational abilities. Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and HRIS platforms like Paycom. Preferred: Human Resources or Employee Services experience at a higher-education institute.
